BlankPlace continues on from the BlankSpace exhibition as an immersive and interactive painting installation focusing on the fragmentation of reality, examining how one’s sense of place and connection is experienced in a perpetual state of flux between deterioration and creation. The material and optical interaction between the seemingly natural and artificial plays on the tension between internal and external experience, while exploring the overlap of digital and physical environments and the boundary between illusion and reality.
unSELF refers to the dissolution of the sense of self that exists as an illusory construct of thought contained within the body.
This series of installations explore the perception of separateness between self and other, mind and matter. The break down of these concepts being necessary to experience embodied conscious awareness. A wide range of material is used that's recognisable within the constructed environment from the utilitarian to creative, natural and artificial qualities.
Signs and symbolic objects that often direct our interaction with the constructed environment have been inverted to counteract perceived boundaries between subject and object. The constructs within the contained spaces aim to physically explore and interpret the liberating transition from dual to non-dualistic experience in the absence of the ego.
This is articulated through geometric forms, materiality, contrast in colour and tone with an interplay of light and shadow. These elements combine to illustrate the shifting and mysterious qualities of consciousness.
The Possess creative label explores self-identity in relation to other things. It examines power dynamics involved in being, having and using. It’s familiar design elements reflect commercial and individual identity assumed through branding, cultural appropriation and conspicuous consumption.
PES (PossessExperienceSpace) was a response to the interchangeability of commerce and culture enhanced by their close alignment. Referring to merging associations between brand product and cultural artefact, with increased commodification through cultural appropriation and perceived cache.
Temporary possession (occupation) of a vacated shop was central to the theme and creating the right environment for object and viewer interaction. Posters and stickers placed around town were street art interventions for social commentary and publicity, forming a trail circling the exhibition location.
PES balanced between a shop and gallery to play with the notion of a buy-in “concept store”. Consisting of art objects recognisable as typical “designer” merchandise. A video projection cycled through the various concepts of Possess. It’s disruptive positioning causing a viewer engagement dilemma in navigating either through or around it.
Aesthetics and process in developing the objects utilised graphic design to create art works. Merging art and design from conception through installation, with personal and industry production.
Site specificity of PES required much on site consideration and layout trial and error to create effective interplay between objects and the subjects navigation through the space. The objects positioning was conceived like pawn pieces interacting on a multidimensional chessboard.
